Virginia Slims Chance is one of the main characters in Raising Hope.

Character Biography

Early Life

Virginia was born in June 4, 1971. When she was born she was close to her grandmother, Maw Maw. Virginia's mother left when she was very young, and she was raised with the false knowledge that her mother had passed away after hitting her head on a lawn duck.

When Virginia was fourteen she began dating Burt Chance, who was sixteen. A year later in a parked car outside her friend's Sweet Sixteen party, Virginia conceived her son, Jimmy, when she was fifteen making her a mother at the age of sixteen.

Virginia had to work a lot to let her son have a childhood and often left him home sitting, staring at a picture of a deer or spending time with his Great Maw Maw (Virginia's grandmother, Jimmy's great-grandmother) which he did not like. When Virginia was thirty nine years old she became a grandmother when Jimmy's daughter, Hope, was born. Virginia gave up smoking when Hope moved in with them and gave the money to Jimmy to pay for Hope's daycare.

Virginia hates her cousin Delilah because she always had better clothes and would belittle Virginia because of this. Virginia stole Burt from Delilah to get back at her for her rude attitude.

She also had to wear a back brace in her teen years due to scoliosis, however, Burt cured this.

Personality

Out of all the people living in the Chance's house, Virgina is the most educated and intelligent. She is sarcastic, enjoys making fun of people (such as her son) but is a kind and caring person. One example of this is the fact that she still takes care of Maw Maw, her grandmother, even though Maw Maw bites, forgets who she is, and once shot a gun at herself, Hope, Burt, Jimmy and Sabrina in the house because she thought that they were Mongeese. 

Virginia is addicted to adding new additions to her pig collection and is often quick to hoard multiple items from the rich people she works for. Virginia, Burt, Jimmy, and Sabrina all release gas after or when eating Chinese food.

Grandparents

Maw Maw, Virginia's grandmother raised her when her mother left. Maw Maw let Virginia live in her house while they raised Jimmy.

Parents

Louise Thompson, Virginia's mother who had her when she was twenty. Louise left when Virginia was two, and Maw Maw told Virginia that her mother had died by suffocating herself accidentally.

Arnold, aka "Deja Vu Man" (among others), Revealed in season 4 premiere as Virginia's gay birth father. Played by Jeffrey Tambor.

Cousins

Delilah, Virginia's wealthy cousin; the two have hated each other since childhood. This was fueled when Virginia stole Burt from Delilah.

Husband

Burt Chance, Virginia's husband. She stole him from her cousin Delilah, who is revealed to still love Burt.

Jimmy Chance, Virginia's son, who she had at sixteen.

Grandchildren

Hope Chance, Virginia's granddaughter.

Sabrina Collins

Is Jimmy's wife and Virginia's daughter in law.

Shelly

Shelly is Sabrina's cousin making them related by law.
